Blue and Green. The light test.

So I slapped a new roll of B&W film in my camera the other day and started shot some random portraits. After the first three victims, I noticed the everyone's eyes were either blue or green. I decided then to dedicate the whole film to shooting people with blue or green eyes. Mélissa was victim number four. I don't always do a light test, but it's often a good practice. Some days the light test ends up becoming the keeper.

...I'm not sure if that's the case yet this time around as I ran out of victims with green and blue eyes. I'm on the hunt for the next victim so I can finish this roll of film and get around to processing it. Do you have blue or green eyes? Don't be shy, volunteers are always welcome!

Sleeeeezak says

Brayden spends a lot of his time behind his video camera. Some people may not know this, but he does just fine on the other side of the camera as well.

I wasn't happy with this photo and I declared a re-shoot. He insisted I post the photo so here it is.

Pancakes and Skateboards listens to the little people and ...the really tall people as well.

American Dream by Ian Ruhter

I was pretty stoked when someone suggested I watch Silver & Light to learn about Ian Ruhter's wet plate photography that is created with his truck turned camera. I've been telling photographers and non-photographers about it ever since.

His latest video brings me to a whole new level of inspiration. Photography-wise sure, but when you get to the part about skateboarder Oscar Loreto it might just blow your mind!

Keep creating wonderful images Ian and as for Oscar...stay awesome!!!

18+ Session - November 21st Edition

It was good to get out last night! I hadn't seen Bram in quite awhile and I hadn't taken his photo in an even longer while.

Front side pivot.

Although I swear I was at the 18+ Edge Skatepark session, I have a sneaky suspicion Alex a.k.a "Frenchie" doesn't make the cut. Rules are meant to be broken, especially when it comes to skateboarding I suppose so no harm no foul?

Pancakes and Bubbles

The last post was the back half of Sunday. We're going all Memento and now staring with the first half. While most of you were still sleeping I imagine at 7:30am, others were already getting in some light sabre action!

Why would we be doing such a thing at 7:30am on a Sunday? Never mind that. What's important is that by 8:30am we were eating pancakes stage side while being entertained by the Bubble Man!

Some crowd participation...

Why such a random story and why the Bubble Man? Who cares... his "creative bubbling" is cool, it's just that simple.

Cookies crumble and bubbles burst.

That's that!

Chocolate cake b-sides

Half way through last Sunday we made a pit stop at Sk8 Skates to swap out the old for the new before lunch.

After lunch, we were off to The Edge Skatepark.

The nature of our business was covered in our last post. Local celebrities Josh and Brayden were present and accounted for.

Déjà vu. I know for a fact Josh was on an all chocolate cake/cup cake diet last weekend!

Thomas tore the place up!

All in all it was a great session/party. After the session we bumped in to Will Power...or he bumped in to us. Either way, he's always got something positive to say.

Until next time...

That's that!

P&S Introducing Ryan Martin

This is Ryan Martin.

We first featured him in action here and we caught up with him again here. He even ended up gracing the pages of P&S Zine Issue III.

I asked my partner-in-crime/number one son/brains of the operation what he thought of Ryan. He asked "on a scale of one to ten"? I said "sure". He informed me "Ryan's a ten". That made the next decision that much easier. We showed up to Ryan's b-day session and instead of insisting he should help me start a Scorpio street gang, we welcomed him to the P&S family!

He accepted, ate some cake and got back down to business!

That's that!!

Grady Kuly - The Video

Here's the light test for a photo we shot using B&W film for Grady's nine page spread in the new P&S Zine

Here's the video shot and edited by our friend Taner than sums up why Grady has a nine page spread!

P/S Zine Issue III Hits The Streets!

If you were lurking on our lovely facebook page, you'd probably already have figured out that P&S Zine Issue III has officially hit the streets! You can pick up a FREE copy at select skate shops when they show up. Copies will be limited.

Don't want to take a chance that they'll be gone before you get there or we don't currently send them to your favourite local retailer of skateboards? Don't fret, you can purchase a copy in our Online Store.

What's all the fuss about? How about a Minor Threat centerfold?

That's just a small glimpse of our new "Behind the Lens" section featuring local Winnipeg photographer Doug Humiski.

We also have a "Fistful of Photos" section featuring Grady Kuly, creative (and whacky) writing by Kory Kaspersion and enough photos to make the zine so thick that it had to be hand stapled! 56 pages in total including the front and back cover without one single ad! Can it get any better than that?

You may have to take it to the washroom TWICE, just to get through it once! Enjoy!

You say it's your birthday, it's my birthday too!

Samosas...check.

Pizza...check.

Treats...check!

Obviously we were ready for Saturday night's "Young Until I die" Birthday Party/Skateboard session at The Edge Skatepark. The key ingredient to a good party? Friends!

Skateboarding friends.

"Cyco" friends.

Non-Skateboarding friends.

Photos of friends that weren't in attendance.

Long time friends!

Creative friends (we love to see modified P&S shirts)!

Bill!

Josh and Kevin.

Frenchie.

Not to be confused with Mr. French!

Darnell!

The young friends...

...the young until I die friends.

Somewhere in between mingling, eating, skateboarding and shooting some quick photos, there was just enough time left to shoot some skateboarding...

David. Front side air.

If I didn't get a chance to say it face to face... a huge thanks to everyone who came out despite the sketchy weather to celebrate, skate and have fun!

The Final Game

I was offered tickets to last Saturday's football game on more than one occasion. I was just in the middle of turning down the last offer, explaining to the generous friend of mine that I don't care much for football, never mind sitting in 2°C weather for it! Before I finished that sentence it dawned on me that I never asked my partner-in-crime if he felt like sitting in the cold to watch football. He was delighted about the idea, so we accepted.

Being that I am not a fan of sports in the least, it was news to me that it was the last game at the Blue Bombers current digs. There was some sentimental value in there due to the fact that over the past few decades, I've been treated to a good number of games. So there's that.

"Professional cameras with detachable lenses" are on the list of contraband items at the stadium. Cameras that "fit in the pocket" are allowed. I had just the right sized pocket for my SLR (detachable lens and all). Shhhhh!

Dressing warm for this game was a must. The guy on the left must have been trying to get some good use out of his Winnipeg Jets jersey considering he won't be wearing it to a NHL Hockey game anytime in the near future.

Can't have a sporting event without a 50/50 draw.

Serious about popcorn.

Serious about evil leprechaun head tattoos!

Popcorn peddler.

Intermission.

The crowd pleaser.

Snacks on snacks.

The one disadvantage to using B&W film this day, was not being able to share just how bright and gold this jacket really is!

As far as this 59 year old stadium is concerned... That's that!
