He's possessed to skate!

I've been listening to a lot of Suicidal Tendencies this week. So it makes sense to me when I see David with his hat flipped up and him pulling out all the stops that the first thing that comes to my mind is "...beware he's possessed to skate!". He really is!

Kristin says...

...Because my friend Kristin says so, I went out and documented a piece of tonight's skateboarding while visiting Fort Garry.

Garrett had his tricks on lock all over the park. Just like this crooked grind.
So there's that.

Aggrocrag

Here's a park/skate spot that appears to be built with a little D.I.Y. flavour (maybe a lot). Looks like so much fun!
Thanks for the link Grady!
In other news...I dislike being forced to use the new editor on blogger. Is it enough to push me over the edge on my goal to get further away from the computer screen and closer to a strict diet of printed photographs only? We'll see.

Hang time with Cody Gallant

We caught up with Cody Gallant at Fort Garry Skatepark tonight.

Lot's of hang time.

Lot's of awesome.

That's that!

We've got the edge....

...the straight edge. Yes I've had that Visual Discrimination song in my head for well over a week now.

Ok...so the weather is still junk outside so we're back to the archives. Yesterday's post was about The Edge Skatepark, today's post is about the straight edge. I am honestly not 100% sure who is in this photo. If memory serves correct it was taken New Years Day in Boston. If I were to make an educated guess by the X Swatch Watch on one of the guitar players I'd say it was a straight edge band. I could be safe to say it's Strife...but that is yet to be confirmed. Maybe Snapcase?

One night while visiting friends in Vancouver four years ago, I met the original bass player for Strife. Him...not so straight edge.

Word on the street...

Everyone is talking about it... The Edge Skatepark is putting on a contest this Friday!

Yesterday...

...this happened.

The sun came out! Grady Kuly also tore up Komenda Skate Park.

Now it is cold out again. That's that.

Canada's Got Talent

Never mind sitting in front of the T.V. watching silly talent reality shows. Get off the couch and go see Up'n'Atom when they come to your town, cause they're up'n'all-over-the-place across Canada starting in a few days.

They'll have their new 7" EP (Deafwish Records) so buy one. They have cool T-Shirts for sale as well ...so you can look extra rad when gleaming the cube!

If The Brat Attack should be playing any of those same shows...don't give them any of your money unless Dave Zegaric promises he's going to save some of it to pay his debt to me. -Thanks!

Neglected

I saw this neglected bike in the Village the other day. It reminded me that I have yet to fulfill my promise to Gilles.

Gilles... I will do a bike feature sometime soon-ish!

Transparency

I shot the first roll of 120 transparency film (aka positive film, slide film) in over two decades. This is a process I haven't done myself since high school, so I of course left it up to the professionals at the lab. Picked up the roll today and was thrilled with the results. I am now in love with Fuji RVP 100.

I just so happened to have the roll loaded in my Mamiya the other day when I randomly bumped in to my friend Karo.

So there's that. Now you can go back to your regularly scheduled program.

Angry Ramp ...we miss you!

Dear Angry Ramp, You made the winter of 2011/2012 more bearable than the winters that came before you. You will be missed.

The ramp is gone, the memories will last forever.

Dillan Lavallee put in some hours collecting the David Seburn/Brendon Sanderson footage. Peatr Thomas put in many hours as well editing this sweet montage. Enjoy!

Get out of town!

Good Friday? Sounded like a good excuse to go on a mini road trip back to Wheat City a.k.a. Brandon.

In chronological order this is how the day unfolded...

Grady Kuly backside air.

Number one son (who told his friends "sometimes we go to Hawaii, sometimes we go to Mexico City, sometimes we go to Brandon") with an indy grab.

Josh Thorvaldson enjoys Brandon's skate park so we invited him out.

Tuck knee.

Shortly after this photo was taken, some local thug strolls up and smashes a bottle in the bowl as some sort of local feud payback chess move. The kids clean up the glass and we move forward...

...Making use of every obstacle.

Josh with a blunt slide on the ledge.

We came, we conquered just like Daniel and this 6 set.

Was it a good Friday? They're all good as long as you remember to have fun!

Celebrate it

Today was a "wake up with an attitude of gratitude" kind of day. So much so that we tried our best to make the most of the entire day by staying out till it turned dark. That's a rebellious move on a school night when one of us is only eight years old.

While we were out we bumped in to Grady, Hank and ...Mat

That's that!

The common bond

com·mu·ni·ty [kuh-myoo-ni-tee] - a social group of any size whose members reside in a specific locality, share government, and often have a common cultural and historical heritage.

It would be a shame if one were to go through life without fully understanding, experiencing and appreciating a real sense of community. I have been fortunate enough to have experienced the community of hardcore, lowriding and skateboarding in this lifetime. That in itself is a large part of why I have always been so passionate about those very things. I've experienced it at a worldwide level. Since the days before the internet, having that one common bond was all that it took.

If we were visiting another city to attend a hardcore show, there would always be that someone ready to take you in and give you a couch to crash on after the show with no questions asked. If we were at a car show in another city, the local lowriders would notice you, introduce themselves, accept you as one of their own, show you the town and offer you that place to stay. They knew you'd do the same for them without a doubt. As a matter of fact, I can only recall one occasion in my life where someone just didn't get it. We asked if we could crash at their place during a trip and they were offended because "they didn't know us". Our answer to that was "and now you never will".

Hitting the streets with a backpack full of camera gear and skateboards under our feet in Mexico City was no different. It wasn't long before we came across the first person on a skateboard. We simply asked for directions and what we ended up with was great friends. One friend led to another and before we knew it we met one group of skaters with all that we could hope for when it comes to making new friends... the Halen Crew. You could sense that these friends rolled with each other like a family. It was no surprise to us that they extended every courtesy to us during our time there last summer. They knew just like we did that we'd do the same for them if the shoe was on the other foot.

If you added up the hours that we spent in each others company it wouldn't add up to much, but it only took moments to realize what great friends they could be. So much so that we've been in touch with them since we returned to Winnipeg, sharing photos and videos, writing about how we're looking forward to going back to visit etc...

All those great memories and positive thoughts about returning to visit is what makes it so hard to swallow the news that two members of both the Halen Crew and the worldwide skateboarding community were taken from us this past Saturday.

César Alpizar is not only a friend to us and I can only imagine so much to so many others, but he is also Halen Ropa, Halen Chica and what appeared to be a large part of the Mexico City skateboarding scene with his giant heart, huge smile, passion for skateboarding and constant generosity.

I was honored to work with César on t-shirt collaborations across two borders. It was just the beginning of projects we were working on together. Not being able to look forward to the next batch of photos sent via e-mail sucks. It leaves me with that empty feeling that sunk in fast realizing that there would be no second chance to visit with each other again in this life.

Johnny Castle a.k.a. Johnny "Ganzo" Castillo may look serious in this photo, but that wasn't his usual demeanor. It's possible that this straight faced moment is only because of how serious he was about loving AC/DC. When he wasn't skateboarding he was laughing and making jokes. He may have even made jokes at my own expense in Spanish without my knowing it.

I was o.k. with that, because it was just great to be around him long enough to watch him tear it up on his skateboard.

Street or bowl, Johnny showed zero fear of any obstacle. The kind of skater I'd fast forward through a skate video of other people's parts just to see his.

Our thoughts and condolences go out to all the friends and family of César and Johnny.

R.I.P. brothers.

Show your support for Bona and Marco!

Back On The Map

Today was the day... "Do you think I can go fast enough this year to go over that thing?" Apparently so!

In other news... Grady tweaks his ollies.

That's that.

The Weather Man

Spring break is over, the weekend showed up and brought the sun, enough said.

We weren't surprised to find Matt at the bowl ...being awesome.

45 minutes prior to a soccer game we needed to get to... Obviously a pre-game warm up was necessary.

We took more photos on film and put some aside for P&S Zine Issue III. More on that later.
