Trick or Treat

Those who know me will quickly tell you sports like football aren't my cup of tea. Every now and again when I take on a new project such as a car build etc... I buckle down and take the offers that come with the means to make these projects happen.

Today that put me in the freezing cold at 9:00am at the stadium for some championship football action.

I was gonna post some sort of "photo of the day" as there were a handful of fun action shots, but instead I post a shot for # 14. This kid must have run a bazillion yards resulting in touchdown after touchdown.

A couple more photo shoots later and finally we were on to trick or treating.

The temperature sucked today. The silver lining: The first snowfall didn't stick around all that much. Despite the cold and the snow I heard there is good news on the horizon. According to the local skateboarding weather network aka Winnipeg Skateboarding's facebook page it's getting warmer this week.

In other news...I hear Adam Hopkins is in town. A Mix of warm weather, a bowl and Adam Hopkins could provide great results. We'll see. Stay tuned.

This ain't no barrier kult

A couple months ago I was approached by a local skater who just happens to have some wicked skate park building skills. He was in town in between trips, had a bag of cement, some tools and was on the hunt for the perfect barrier to create a new skate spot. He tried to enlist the Skateboard Coalition to help him find a barrier. He thought of taking the idea and having it blessed with some sort of legitimacy from the powers that be.

There were discussions made and some contacts contacted, but nothing came to fruition for the time being. Which is a bummer, cause I was hoping to see some barrier kult action.

My disappointment was lifted quite a bit today when some Wreckless Vikings invited me out to the bowl to witness the "Viking Grind".

We all know serious Vikings are full of hate.

It's simple, it's hardcore, it's the Viking Grind.

Unlike the barrier kult the Vikings don't need balaclavas, it just happened to be 2 degrees Celsius with a wind chill bringin' it down to -2.

The End.

Saturdays always start the same way...

...pancakes! Everyone loves pancakes.

Here's an oldie, but a goodie.

Round 3

So Sam Katz has been elected for his third term with 25,000+ vote gap between him and the closest candidate. I've seen and heard quite a few people complain about the victory. I'm hoping they at least voted to express their concerns. I get it....people are concerned about our high murder rate (per capita). I doesn't matter to me how big or how many more people live in Toronto, Vancouver, New York, Chicago or LA...they simply have more murders by the hundreds in some cases even when their crime rates are at their lowest.

A lot of the murders have to do with a lot of drugs. Allegedly we have a lot of it. They can shut down a crack house, we all know it will pop back up again. Supply and demand is a bitch. We're lucky when record amounts of drugs are seized before they even make it in to the city. The same police that I'd be the first to complain about when they aren't doing their job (so far as to go public with concerns on The Great Canadian Talk Show) even have their wins as well.

I'm sure there are some pros and cons with having Sam Katz as a mayor as I'm sure there would be with some of the other candidates.

I always try to view the situation on how much is my life really affected in a ten foot circle around me as I go on about my life.

Despite who's in charge at the moment I still have to drive down this road to get to work every day.

Before I can get down to the fallen apart road I do have to pass these lovely brand spankin' new traffic calming devices. I hope to see some wax on these curbs and possible some modified signage location in the near future to make these things really worth the investment.

I was confused by "curb outs" at first, because I thought they were to make it more bicycle friendly (by leaving less room to pass the cyclist?). Then I read up on them and learned that this particular traffic calming device is to extend the sidewalk so that the pedestrian has a shorter distance to cross and to avoid popping out in front of parked cars. Ok ...expensive...but makes sense.

The bike paths are lovely, but in my opinion designed for leisurely riding on a Sunday afternoon due to the fact that you have to "dismount" every so many yards for every yield and cross street that intersects the path. Not designed for commuting unless you have an extra 45 minutes on your side. At least Winnipeg is all caught up with the Joneses.

It doesn't matter who is mayor today, there are still cute girls abound. Seriously... Winnipeg wins this category hands down. Yes I am a male, I have put in the work, traveled a few corners of the globe and still come to this conclusion each time I return home.

The rumour was that the mayor wanted the police chief to crack down on Sunday Night cruisin',but it was denied. Crackdown or no crackdown cool cars are still built and driven every day.

The mayor kicked a kid in the face, but the voting majority loves him anyway (yes it was an accident).

It doesn't matter that the no skateboarding by-law still exists on the streets of Winnipeg...

...We have a plethora of wonderful skate parks and when the Mayor's not looking you can session right at his place of employment!

...and at the end of each day it doesn't matter to me new mayor or old mayor my life is full of awesomeness.

Big pants, small wheels

This is a quick filler post in lieu of the post I was working on until local internet service provider SHAW made MTS look real good for a few hours earlier tonight by not working at all.

I was browsing the archives the other day when I found this shot of Mike D. and Kory at the Winnipeg Convention Centre. The over sized pants and the super small wheels tells me it must be 1991.

Back to the Future?

Not a lot of skateboarding going on when it's raining, the temperature is dropping below zero degrees Celsius and the wind is gusting at 60km/hr. So today I ventured far beyond skateboarding to keep the content fresh.

Many years ago I met twinn brothers Dave and Dean when they approached me at a car show while I was runnig my booth at the time. Shortly after that we started doing almost everything together with regards to the world of lowriding and building cars.

Skip a few years later and I was helping Dave drive around and pick out housing at Humber College in Etibicoke Ontario (which of course feels like it was yesterday). Well apparently it wasn't yesterday as Dave's back in town shaking things up with a new position with the provincial government's Electric Vehicle Development Initiatives program.

Dave took me on a tour of the space the "Urbee" project has been worked on by the team he's involved with that is heading for SEMA in Las Vegas tomorrow to share what they've completed so far.

Within this space there is almost a chronological visual map if you will.

A few jems were sitting in this pile of antique bicylcles.

Then there was this more modern looking bicycle or "human powered vehicle".

We move along with a human powered/battery assisted project...

...on to Urbee.

Take that plan and make a model.

Throw down $160,000 in pocket change and have a larger model created on a 3D printer.

Get Urbee up and running so you have something to get around town in hybrid style.

For more on Urbee, check it out at SEMA or catch it on an up and coming episode of Daily Planet.

Will work for food.

Nate the acquaintance in the bright red Fred Perry enlisted me to take a crack at using my limited I.T. skills to fix his computer tonight. When he told me he'd be paying in advance with food. I accepted the challenge.

End results: food consumed, and Nate's back on the interweb.

The time is near...

So there's this book being made where the proceeds are supporting Kids Help Phone. It's going to have lots of great photos from local photographers (Doug Humiski, David Seburn, John Campbell, Caitlin Schlamb, Joey Senft, Ailsa Dyson and yours truly...just to name a few).

Do you like the Dead Kennedys? Minor Threat? Doug Humiski took pictures of them and so many more awesome bands live in Winnipeg and I would only imagine some of those pictures will grace the pages of this book, so it's a must have if you like to have things that are good.

There's an opportunity to cast your vote on your favorite cover shot! Top five pics will be on display at Into the Music, Monday, November 1st. Voting begins at the show November 5th at the Royal Albert Arms during this show.

Pre-orders of the Call Response book will be available on November 5th, 2010. Details below:

It's cold outside.

A blast from the past with a selection from the archives. A terribly scratched up negative, but good enough for a lazy Sunday morning look at the archives.

Mailbomb

Sometimes people ask me for my address out of the blue. I always request no mailbombs of course. Quite often the mailbox stays empty, on some occasions goodies show up. A friendly package showed up this week from Four Star Distribution/C1RCA. A pleasant and much welcome surprise. Thank you!

Evil Boy

I am about the furthest thing from up to date regarding the goings on of the world wide web. When I do want to check out some great photos and find out what's going on in LA and New York I usually peep The Hundreds Blog

So today's post about South Africa's Die Antwoord on Jimmy Kimmel live last night is all new stuff to me. It links to some videos already taken down from youtube...so it's not for the kiddies. If you've got some time on your hands and you're behind the times like me, enter the visually interesting world of Die Antwoord.

Don't mess with Texas

After Carter Dennis from SPS checked out the P&S photos from the two latest skate parks developed in Manitoba he shared a link from his facebook page of the sick Marble Falls park that opened in Texas this past weekend. Wow! Thanks for sharing!

One is never enough.

Why should one settle for sampling only one new skate park this weekend when one can sample two!

New Line Skateparks have teamed up with local landscape architects Scatliff+Miller+Murray Inc. again to create the North End Skatepark at the corner of Murray and Man St. at the Red River Community Centre.

Pancakes and Skateboards were on the scene to sample it out and give your second virtual tour in two days.

Similar to Brandon, this park is ready to skate. Both parks will be fully complete with grand openings in 2011!

Brandon Sanderson was thrilled as this park is now the closest in proximity to his residence. Hopefully that doesn't mean he's going to stop ripping up "the carpet" at The Forks anytime soon. That's a sight you don't want to miss.

He gets a P&S cameo solely based on the fact that he was wearing a Dead Kennedys shirt.

This dude gets a cameo solely based on the fact the green and purple go great together!

Lucas Thorvaldson feeble grind.

Lucas with a kick flip.

Our visit went past dusk when with Chris Rossong pulling of a smooth switch nose manual just before his departure.

Like all new parks, there are BMX's a plenty and droves of kids that have no concept of simple wait your turn and "look out" skate park etiquette. That's as inevitable as the good time you will have when you visit any of Manitoba's skate parks.

Toys: out of the box

As anxious as I was to visit the new Brandon skate park our trip had a hidden agenda. While in Brandon I acquired some new equipment to play with.

I've always had a soft spot for all things chrome.

Brandon Skatepark. The Visit

If we're going to take the two hour journey to Brandon we might was well stop off and visit Platform Skate shop along the way (due to contstruction on the Trans-Canada, you don't have a choice but to drive through Portage La Prairie so there's no good excuse not to!

Call them, visit them, buy stuff and/or go hang out on their couches.

Our friend and co-board member of the Skateboard Coalition of Manitoba Steve.

They're well stocked for the inevitable winter season.

They've got sweet shop decks. The price is right, go check them out!

Brandon or bust. We've arrived!

Aaron and his crew were shredding up the tranny sections of the park. I'd love to say he landed this frontside air...but unfortunately after a handful of tries, this was the one that he was closest to sticking. He fought the concrete and the concrete won. I'm sure he'll have it locked by our next visit.

Mr. D approves of the park!

If you're contemplating the drive. Here's the visual tour. The landscapers are still wrapping up their end to prep for next year's official grand opening. As far as the locals are concerned it's open and worth the visit!
